Don't let water damage sink your day

SERVPRO of East Clackamas, Hood River & Wasco Counties would like to offer Columbia River Gorge residents helpful tips to prevent water damages to

Outside:

1.  Disconnect Hoses

Standing water in a hose may freeze back into the pipe and cause it to burst inside your home.

2.  Clean Gutters and Downspouts

Clean your gutters at least twice a year to avoid blockage and ice dams.

3. Maintain or clear Bushes and Vegetation

Thriving shrubs can be a beautiful thing – except when their roots wrap around your pipes and break them.

Inside:

4.  Know your Water Main Location

Know the location of your water main and shut it off if you leave for an extended amount of time.

5.  Check Appliances Regularly

Check and maintain your appliances regularly for leaks according to manufacturer’s directions.

6.  Investigate Leaks Right Away and Fix Promptly

If you opt to ignore moisture damage, or postpone making the necessary repairs, be prepared to experience mold, mildew, or dry rot.

7.  Upgrade Washing Machine Hoses

Old, brittle or leaky washing machine hoses are among the most frequent causes of water loss for homeowners. Consider installing stainless steel hoses.

8.  Check Your Water Pressure

If the water pressure to your home is set too high, pipes and hoses may fail under the pressure.

9.  Monitor Your Water Bill

Sometimes, the only way you know that water is leaking is taking a closer look at your water bill.

The local professionals at SERVPRO are always here to help!

Did you know?

A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the build up of pressure between the water source and the blockage.

A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly. The professionally trained technicians at SERVPRO of East Clackamas, Hood River and Wasco Counties are faster to any size disaster, bringing the latest equipment and industry leading training to the Columbia River Gorge.

If you suspect a frozen pipe

If you open a faucet and no water comes out, don’t take any chances. Call a plumber. If a water pipe bursts, turn off the water at the main shut-off valve (usually at the water meter or where the main line enters the building); leave the faucet(s) open until repairs are completed. Don’t try to thaw a frozen pipe with an open flame; this will damage the pipe and may even start a building fire. You might be able to thaw a pipe with a handheld hair dryer or heat gun. Slowly apply heat, starting close to the faucet end of the pipe, with the faucet open, then work toward the coldest section.

Hardwood floor rescue in Hood River Oregon

2/25/2019 (Permalink)

The local professionals at SERVPRO use the latest state of the art equipment.

At SERVPRO of East Clackamas, Hood River & Wasco Counties, often times we are asked if hardwood floors can be successfully dried following a water damage event. The answer depends on several factors, the main one being- how long have the floors been affected by water.

Time is of the essence

While other factors will affect the results (type of wood, thickness, age, etc), the sooner a hardwood floor can be dried, the better the chances are that the floor can be saved.

State of the art equipment

In this situation, SERVPRO of East Clackamas, Hood River & Wasco Counties was quickly on scene and deployed "Rescue Mats" - that concentrate vacuum directly on the flooring surface, drawing the water out through the channels in the flooring. This also protects the finish of the flooring, unlike conventional "wand extraction" or "truck mount extraction" used by many water mitigation contractors or carpet cleaning companies.

Going on a trip this Holiday Season?

SERVPRO of East Clackamas, Hood River and Wasco Counties Professionals suggest when away from the house for an extended period during the winter, be careful how much you lower the heat. A lower temperature may save on the heating bill, but there could be a disaster if a cold spell strikes and pipes that normally would be safe, freeze and burst. A solution is to drain the water system. This is the best safeguard. With no water in the pipes, there is no freezing. This remedy should be considered even when the homeowner is not leaving but is concerned about a serious overnight freeze. To drain the system, shut off the main valve and turn on every water fixture (both hot and cold lines) until water stops running. It’s not necessary to leave the fixtures open, since the system is filled mostly with air at that point and not subject to freezing. When returning to the house, turn on the main valve and let each fixture run until the pipes are full again.
